Certainly, the band's monster modern rock does sound like it could slip onto an active rock playlist -- maybe not quite in 2009, but earlier in the decade, when metallic rockers heavy on the guitar downstrokes and power ballads with chant-along vocals were relatively common. That's not to say that Skillet sound out-of-step with the times -- there's still a gleam to the Howard Benson production that sounds modern -- and they do mange to imprint their own identity on this sometimes generic brand of contemporary rock, thanks to their communal vocals, with male and female voices trading off and skyscraper hooks. Skillet also don't always focus solely on religion, as many of their songs are grounded in inspirational positivity, so that's another reason why Awake finds the band poised to break into the mainstream. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0741/4248/2715/files/1b242b708fe36bf4cff086cc1b1826df_90c5f775-be45-4f91-9702-f87e00f5af5c.jpg?v=1777461155
comatose
Comatose
1. The Nashville-based Christian band has always set itself apart from the CCM masses -- touring with secular hard rock bands and drawing huge festival crowds -- while sustaining an undying message of positivity and hope. Unleashed is aptly titled: two decades into their existence, Skillet have made their biggest album yet, an explosion of bombast and scope that draws on mainstream influences without wavering from their wholesome values. With contributions from Brian Howes (Halestorm, Daughtry), Kevin Churko (Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch), Neal Avron (Linkin Park, Fall Out Boy), and Seth Mosley (Newsboys, TobyMac), Unleashed is also Skillet's most polished effort. Korey Cooper and Seth Morrison's riffs maintain the energy at caffeine-highs, while Jen Ledger's drumming pounds with precision intensity. Vocalist and sole founding member John Cooper holds everything together with a full-bodied delivery and consistently strategic lyrics that are subtle enough to please fans of any faith. The best moments on Unleashed are high-octane turbo blasts like "Feel Invincible," "Undefeated," and "Out of Hell," churning tracks that echo the fury of Muse or even, on the latter, Slipknot. They even borrow directly from Orgy's cover of "Blue Monday" on the bouncing "Burn It Down." Cooper's vocal interplay with his wife Korey and Ledger adds a brightness and cohesion similar to the best moments on 2009's Awake. Meanwhile, the orchestration and gravity that infused the Evanescence-lite Comatose layers stadium anthems like "I Want to Live" and the epic closer "The Resistance." All of these heavier moments elicit purely physical responses, but there are also breaks to pause and contemplate. Stripping back the headlong rock charge, Skillet include a few purely praise & worship breathers like the polished Killers-synthy "Stars," the Hillsong-with-bigger-amps "Lions," and the gorgeous "Watching for Comets." Whether in a giant mosh pit or a congregation of the faithful, Skillet know how to play a crowd and Unleashed succeeds on both fronts. ~ Neil Z. It was safe music for good kids who liked the beat of rock music but didn't want to run the risk of hearing lots of vulgarity or of supporting the promotion of messages they considered dangerous and wrong. No more. These days Christian pop music can take almost any form -- hip-hop, death metal, ska -- and the religious messages are very often hidden in lyrics that sound superficially like love songs. TobyMac, who is basically the Justin Timberlake of Christian pop, has always bucked the latter trend while embracing the former: his music is resolutely beat-based, but his lyrics are unabashedly devotional. "Boomin'" includes a couplet that nicely summarizes his approach: "Boomin' out the stereo system/Here to rep the Most High with this one." With Dubbed & Freq'd, tobyMac consolidates his bid for the status of World's Funkiest Jesus Freak (a designation he has cheerfully co-opted in several songs). There are moments of glorious weirdness, several of them occurring during the clattery and clangorous dubstep mix of "Start Somewhere," and a few of irritating pretense (note the fake Jamaican accent on the reggae-tinged "Hold On"). On this occasion, the Chicago-based quintet finally decided to take a chance on expanding its puritanical doom outlook, and infused the album with additional retro-rock inspirations such as acid rock, psychedelia, and Beatlesque variety, resulting in the band's most unique and user-friendly work. From the very get-go, the Hendrix-ian "Come Touch the Sky" literally burst off into the lysergic stratosphere and the mock apology of "'Scuse Me" vented years and years of living-out-of-time frustration in under three minutes, while the hallucinogenic likes of "Rain" and "Mr. White" seemed to represent the polar emotional opposites of the hippie generation's naïve idealism (the first was Woodstock, the second Altamont). Less adventurous, riff-based creations like "The Sleeper," "Tragedy Man," and the title track afforded old-time fans a few opportunities to reconnect with Trouble's Sabbath-derived origins, but Manic Frustration's defining triumphs were undoubtedly those that dared mesh together all elements of Trouble's expanded musical kaleidoscope. And so, one is inevitably drawn to the sheer guitar-shredding fantasy and frenzy of "Hello Strawberry Skies," the unsettling comedown and blissful return provided by the gentle "Breathe...," and the staggering majesty of "Memory's Garden" (all highlights of Trouble's career), where singer Eric Wagner's mournful bray spins a tale of loss, faith, and hope of simply chilling proportions. Sadly, none of these were capable of stopping Manic Frustration's title from ringing horribly prophetic after its release, when Trouble once again faced the mixed blessings of widespread critical acclaim but no significant album sales beyond the underground heavy metal faithful. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0741/4248/2715/files/be197dc713d34abfe15f4b5e94895cc0_ec4fc197-b795-4c9b-b6a8-d29aabe23753.jpg?v=1778407955
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0741/4248/2715/products/1b45d55776c417fe72cc175dab8707ca_59695e81-cec1-447e-aa54-b230da5b3cc1.jpg?v=1697460518
trouble-1
Trouble
Following the conclusion of Trouble's recording deal with Metal Blade and three years of relative silence, few fans expected to hear from the Chicago band ever again. Originally released as a somewhat dull and flat collection of post-Pretty Hate Machine industrial pop, the band was disappointed enough in the results to re-record almost the whole thing and put it back out. The newer album is leaner, tougher, and packed with disorienting samples and chugging guitars. This is a wonderful change from the original, and it reflects the melodic movements in the industrial scene which would become the prevalent style throughout the decade. Ugly songs like "Onenemy" and "Dissolved" are electro-metal steamrollers, blasting through the album with savage intensity that is rarely present in the Christian metal scene. Although the Trent Reznor influence is still felt quite strongly on the material here, Circle of Dust has still carved out a unique place in the industrial underground. Connick has recorded big band, small group, and orchestral albums in the past, not to mention his work on Broadway. Here, he adds yet another genre to his resumé, interpreting traditional hymns and gospel songs alongside similarly soulful originals. He achieves some transcendent moments on the record, thanks in no small part to his omnipresent virtuosity, playing every instrument on every track. You might expect that an album Connick recorded in isolation would be a pared-down affair featuring little more than his voice and a trusty old piano, but he proves to be a pretty self-sufficient one-man band, performing keys, horns, guitar, percussion, and backing harmonies. This album feels more in line with his forays into Stevie Wonder-esque soul and pop on 1996's Star Turtle and 2015's That Would Be Me. It's a facet of his repertoire that feels joyful and exuberant. From the '80s drum machine on the title track to the analog synths of "Thank You For Waiting (For Me)," the vintage R&B sound that pervades much of the album clearly holds a place in his heart, and it grows on you as he moves from track to track. Meanwhile, the gospel organ and twangy guitar of songs like "That Old Rugged Cross" and "Old Time Religion" conjure a rousing, Ray Charles-like old-timeyness that fits squarely in Connick's wheelhouse. ~ Matt Collar
Personnel: Amy Grant (vocals); Chris Rodriguez (guitar, background vocals); Jerry McPherson, Don Kirkpatrick, Dann Huff, Gordon Kennedy, Tom Hemby (guitar); Sam Levine (baritone saxophone); Mark Douthit (saxophone); Mike Haynes (trumpet); Barry Green (trombone); Blair Masters, Michael Omartian (keyboards, sequencing, background vocals); Robbie Buchanan (keyboards, bass); Charlie Peacock (keyboards, programming); Keith Thomas (synthesizer, bass, programming, background vocals); Tommy Sims (bass); Chris McHugh, David Raven (drums); Mark Hammond, Brian Tankersley (programming); Donna McElroy, Ron Hemby, Vicki Hampton, Chris Eaton, Kim Fleming, Diana DeWitt, Gary Chapman, Susanne Schwartz, Kurt Howell (background vocals).
Producers: Michael Omartian, Keith Thomas, Brown Bannister.
After establishing herself as the most popular singer in the contemporary Christian music scene during the 1980s, Amy Grant made her secular pop breakthrough with 1991's HEART IN MOTION. Mission accomplished, Sligh signed with a subsidiary of Word, the largest CCM label in the U.S., then delivered the concept album The Anatomy of Broken in the fall of 2010. More ambitious in every way than its predecessor, The Anatomy of Broken aims for nothing less than a deep exploration of what it means to be human, why we are damaged -- i.e., "broken" -- and what we can do to heal. The album's conceptual nature, not just how the songs all revolve around a theme but how Sligh and co-producer Steve Bishir give the album a sonic unity, make The Anatomy of Broken a more cohesive, purposeful record than his debut. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
