Gospel Mix, Vol. 3

Even in 2009, for many listeners gospel music still evoked visions of old ladies in flower print dresses and big hats, or mass choirs stomping their feet after a fire-and-brimstone sermon. One listen to GOSPEL MIX VOL. III reveals that modern religious artists are just as hip and vital as their secular counterparts. Zachardi Cortez's "I Wanna Praise You" employs a backing of Rihanna-style vocals and Snoop Dogg-esque squiggly synth lines, while Niyoki's "Joy" delivers a modern update of throbbing Donna Summer-style disco. Good ol churchin' music is well-represented too, with Revive's organ-driven "On One Accord" and Darrell McFadden's Sam & Dave-channeling Stax revival "That's What He Did For Me."
